ADHD Q & A

What is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which means it affects how the brain develops during early childhood, altering normal brain function.

ADHD affects a person’s ability to focus and control behavior. Once thought of as a childhood condition that you outgrow, it’s now known that ADHD is a lifelong disorder.

However, ADHD symptoms tend to change over time, which may require changes in how you manage your condition and life.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

Symptoms of ADHD fall into three categories: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

Inattention

Children and adults with ADHD may have a harder time focusing on tasks, paying attention to conversations, or completing assignments. Inattention may also affect a person’s ability to stay organized or manage their time.

Hyperactivity

With hyperactivity, you or your child may have a hard time sitting still, feeling the need to be in constant motion. Hyperactivity may also cause you to feel restless.

Impulsivity

Impulsivity in ADHD affects a person’s ability to maintain self-control. You may make decisions without thinking about the consequences. Interrupting others when they’re talking is also an impulsive symptom of ADHD.

How is ADHD treated?

The practice customizes ADHD treatment based on age and symptoms. Treatment for ADHD usually includes a combination of ADHD medications and therapy.

ADHD medications

ADHD medications include stimulants and nonstimulants. Stimulants are the primary treatment for ADHD and include medications that increase levels of neurotransmitters in the brain to improve focus and thinking. Stimulants work right away, but may affect appetite and sleep.

Nonstimulant medications work in a similar fashion to stimulant medication, but they take longer to work and tend to have fewer side effects.

Therapy

Inland Empire Behavioral Group customizes therapy for ADHD based on personal needs. Therapy may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), family therapy, and help managing school- or work-related responsibilities.

ADHD is a lifelong condition that may affect how you learn, work, and socialize. For management of your ADHD from an experienced provider, call Inland Empire Behavioral Group or schedule a consultation online today.
